What the traditional meat production process looks like and why on-farm processing is the only way to achieve the highest welfare beef.
Traditional Commercial Meat Processing
Animal welfare has always been the driving force behind Provenir – the first and only on-farm meat processing operation of its kind in Australia. For many years, meat production has involved a multi-step process whereby animals are relocated from the farm on which they are born and are taken to a sale yard, then on to a high-density feedlot (often with an extra stage in between) to finally arrive at the abattoir. This process involves transport at least three times. This transport, as well as the new alien environments that the animal finds itself in, creates prolonged states of animal stress. On-farm processing of free-range beef means that cattle can bypass these interim stages and spend their entire lives in a familiar and low-stress environment.
The Provenir On-Farm, Free-Range Difference
Unfortunately, Provenir is the only operation of its kind in the country and, for the majority of animals processed in Australia, the unnecessary reality is stressful transport along with unnatural and changing environments. Provenir’s on-farm processing means that animals can live their entire lives at the farm on which they were born. This translates to stable herd structures, familiar and consistent interactions with humans, and (most importantly) a consistently stress-free environment.
Does animal stress impact meat quality? Absolutely! Prolonged stress creates muscle tension and often toughness of meat while stress hormones influence meat flavour and quality. Provenir proudly delivers 100% free-range, grass-fed, and hormone-free meat. This grass-fed beef is grown slowly and naturally – a complete contrast to the high-production systems in place across most commercial beef operations in Australia.
The highest welfare practices form part of the Provenir Six Star Promise and are integral to our commitment to provide high welfare, ethical meat delivered straight to the consumer.
