As we hurtle toward the end of September and the weather warms up, before we stash the Ugg boots and dust off the swim suits, we have one important thing left to do: decide who is the best footy team in the country. Yes, it’s the Grand Finals season. Whether you follow real footy or league, there is a fair chance you’ll want to plan the perfect Grand Final Feast (GFF). Provenir are here to help with some tips to create a delicious GFF for your family and friends.
First, there are decisions to be made: BBQ or no BBQ?
No BBQ
For the serious grand final footy, a sit-down meal can be a memorable occasion and a safe bet. You can never tell what the weather will be like in late September, or early October, so leaving the BBQ covered for the big game will deliver on many levels: A proper meal to keep your energy levels up, sitting inside in case it’s hailing, and you get to bond properly with all the guests. If you don’t want to risk the BBQ then our CEO Chris’ ‘Mind Blowing Brisket’ could tick all the boxes. It takes nearly a full day to cook and is packed with flavour and enough protein and carbs to keep the whole team in top form right until the end of the game. Swap the potatoes for buns and you can turn them into delicious Slow Cooked Brisket Sandwiches.
BBQ
We may live in a country of weather extremes but every good Aussie understands the risks and knows that entertaining starts and finishes at the BBQ. That smoking grill is where all of the deep analysis of form occurs and as a bonus, if the weather turns cold, wet and windy, it’s a great place to keep warm. For a standup BBQ we have so many options we would take until round one in 2025 to get through them, so here are a few choice tips:
Sausage Sandwich: The Bunnings sausage is popular for a reason; bread and snags are like a hammer and nail – just banging together. Trick things up by trying an Italian Sausage Sandwich. With a spicier profile and lavished with sliced peppers, onions and tomato spaghetti sauce these are delicious and filling. The traditional ‘brat bun’ (soft white buns) are fine but try a crispier baguette or even a soft tortilla, naan or flatbread. We have great sausage options – for the spice-minded our unique Spicy Beetroot sausages feature chilli and are delicious, or use our super popular Beef and Herb.
Steak Sanger: Yes you all say! Great idea. But before you order our delicious porterhouse, here is another idea. Picanha, Tri-tips or Bavette cuts. Because you intend to slice your cooked steak up for a sandwich you have some other options than a standard steak. These cuts are beautiful for a sandwich or fajitas. The Tri Tips and Bavette need a longer cooking but do not overcook, keep the inside under medium for a tender result. The Picanha needs a good render on the fat side and five minutes on each side to reach around 55 degrees inside. Rest for at least 10 minutes.
If you really want to impress the guest you can’t go past Jamie Oliver’s Steak and Onion Sandwich. He uses a skillet inside because the English have no idea how to use a BBQ, but you know what to do. Rest your meat well after cooking and choose a stout bread that will handle the juices and not fall apart.
Burgers: We are on a roll here with bread so let’s finish on a high with burgers. Quick and easy wins on the big day and our burger patties will kick a goal with your guests. Lean grass-fed beef and bugger all else. Set up a burger station with a variety of condiments and fillings. The onions again will play a starring role if cooked right and you can grill your patties a bit earlier and keep them warm and covered so you can then finish them to order, adding cheese on top, or grilled pineapple if you are brave. Our Wagyu Hamburger patties are the ultimate but you can’t go past our always-popular Hamburger packs.
If you are still deciding which option to pick up, then one of our Summer BBQ Packs that feature steaks, sausages and BBQ patties plus tender grass-fed beef kebabs is a sure winner. Everyone will be happy, except whoever backs the losing team, but at least they won’t be crying on an empty stomach.
Enjoy!
