Thousands of years ago, before the beauty industry even existed, people used tallow to heal and rejuvenate their skin. From ancient Egyptians and Romans to indigenous Americans and Australians, luxurious animal fats were used to make traditional soaps, balms, and lotions. Tallow is soft and supple, full of vitamins and minerals, and great for natural healing.
Over recent years, there has been a sharp rise of interest in natural skincare ingredients. Tallow beef soaps and balms are particularly popular thanks to their rich nutritional profile and compatibility with the human body.
Beef Tallow Is Magic for Your Skin
If you’re looking for natural skincare, beef tallow is the perfect ingredient to make creamy soaps and soothing balms. It has natural moisturising properties, is full of nourishing nutrients, and is very bio-compatible. Beef tallow soaps and balms are also durable and great for the environment, especially when you make your own.
Benefits of Beef Tallow Soap
Beef tallow soap offers the following benefits:
Natural Moisturising Properties
Beef tallow soap has similar fat saturation levels to human skin. This similarity makes it easy to absorb, with the organic compatibility of tallow locking in moisture and nutrients without clogging pores. Beef tallow makes a fantastic moisturiser, and it’s even suitable for many people with skin sensitivities.
Vitamin-Rich Nourishment
Tallow contains lots of healing properties, thanks to vitamins A, B12, D, E, and K. It also features anti-inflammatory linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid. While some commercial soaps include a similar nutritional profile, natural ratios between ingredients are largely ignored, and synthetic chemicals are added to increase shelf life.
Creamy and Luxurious Lather
Soap made from tallow is incredibly soft and luxurious. People love its light creamy lather, which feels amazing on the skin. Due to the organic compatibility of tallow fat, it stays longer, keeping your skin soft and smooth. Tallow soap is also great at removing dirt without stripping away your natural beneficial oils.
Durability and Low Cost
If you’re looking for a durable soap to use in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry, tallow-based products are ideal. This natural soap helps to protect your skin and remove foreign oils, and it breaks down slower than other soaps for long-lasting action. This makes it much more cost-effective, especially when you make it at home.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly soap, you can’t beat natural beef tallow. It lasts longer than synthetic soaps, and it’s cheap and easy to make from basic ingredients. Less energy is also used for its packaging and transportation, which makes it much more sustainable. Whether it’s made at home or bought locally, small batches are much better for the Earth than mass production.
Why Beef Tallow Balm Is a Skincare Essential
Much like tallow soap, beef tallow balm is a fantastic product that’s great for your skin. This natural healing marvel is easy to make and apply as a soothing agent. The natural properties of tallow balm are ideal for numerous skin conditions, including dry and cracked skin, burns and rashes, lines and wrinkles, sun damage, eczema, and more.
The following tallow balm benefits are key:
Deep Moisturisation
Whether it’s applied on the body or face, beef tallow balm offers deep moisturisation. It works much like tallow soap, but the soft and smooth consistency is easier for your body to soak up. Just like tallow soap, the vitamins, minerals, and bio-compatibility of this material make it the ideal moisturiser.
Protective Barrier
The vitamins in tallow balm help to protect against microbes, toxins, and free radicals. Vitamin A supports the healthy function of your sebaceous glands, vitamin D aids with cell repair, vitamin E offers protection from pollution and chemicals, and vitamin K helps with recovery from skin damage.
Softening and Smoothing
Beef tallow balm has softening and smoothing qualities that help to reinvigorate your skin. This natural balm gives your skin the nutrients and natural oils it needs to stay supple. While no one can stop the ageing process, nourishing your skin on a regular basis is the best way to slow it down.
Natural Skincare Alternative
The nutrients in beef tallow balm have immediate and long-lasting benefits. On a day-to-day basis, it lasts longer and doesn’t require constant reapplication. It’s also more natural than other beauty products, which makes it a viable long-term skincare solution.
The Importance of Grass-Fed Beef Tallow
If you want to add tallow soaps or balms to your beauty regime, products produced from grass-fed beef are the ideal solution. While all tallow products can be beneficial, grass-fed produce takes it to the next level. It has more nutrients, it’s much more ethical, and it has greater quality and consistency standards.
Higher Nutrient Content
Whether you’re talking about meat, milk, or beauty products, grass-fed beef has a richer and more balanced nutritional profile. It’s packed with vitamins A, B, and E and loaded with beneficial antioxidants. It also has less saturated fat and a better ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids.
Ethical and Sustainable Choice
Grass-fed beef is produced in free-range farming environments, with animals raised ethically in clean and humane conditions. This traditional and environmentally conscious farming practice is about learning lessons from the past to ensure sustainability for the future.
Improved Quality and Consistency
Tallow derived from healthy grass-fed animals yields better skincare products. With more beneficial vitamins and minerals, fewer unwanted environmental toxins, and a better balance between natural compounds, you will enjoy improved quality and consistency.

Cold-Pressed Tallow Soap
Ingredients
- 500 grams Provenir Beef Tallow
- 340 ml Coconut oil
- 125 ml Lye
- 280 ml Water (distilled)
Instructions
- Using a digital scale, measure out your water and pour it into a heat-resistant glass. This is important because when you add in the lye, it will get very hot very quickly.
- Measure out the lye and add it to the water. Stir the lye until it dissolves. Note, the chemical reaction will cause it to heat up quickly.
- Measure out the tallow and coconut oil, add to a saucepan. Melt over medium heat.
- Once the ingredients are melted, allow them to cool back down to 37.7°C. This may take a couple of hour.
- Once the fats reach 37.7°C, it is time to mix the lye water with the oils. Slowly add the lye and water to the oils and mix with an immersion blender. This will take a couple of minutes. You will know it is the right consistency when the soap from the blender drips and pools up on top of the soap in the saucepan. This is known as the trace.
- If using essential oils or color, add those in now. Stir well.
- Allow the soap to harden and sit in the molds for at least 24 hours or up to 3 days.
- Remove the soap from the molds and allow it to cure for 3-4 weeks before using.
Notes
It is important to handle lye with caution. Ensure that you wear protective goggles and gloves, and also work in an area with adequate ventilation.
